Ahilans story

Both Ms. Pauline and Ms. Sonia are the most kind and helpful people you can ever meet. They help you with everything from the start to the end and even once I am already on campus, they still keep in touch if we need anything whenever and wherever. I could not recommend any two people better than them.

1. Studying in Switzerland – Why did you choose Switzerland as a study destination. And how was your experience studying at SHMS?

I have always been intrigued by the hospitality industry and was keen on considering for a long time. Once I finished my A-levels, I instantly connected with Ms. Sonia and was introduced to the Swiss Hotel Management School in Switzerland. Shortly after I learned that Switzerland was the birthplace of the hospitality industry and instantly knew that this was the place for me. I looked over my course and fell in love with it as we get the experience and knowledge of any common business course, whilst having the benefit of the hospitality industry combined with it. It is a no brainer as it helps students who like the practical aspect of it whilst still having theory based subjects.

Overall this helps as this course helps to shape us into young entrepreneurs. This is good because it’s not always about getting the best results, it’s about having a balance between the two as it helps students understand the outside world and how businesses are run and what is involved with it. With internships merged with our courses, it can help out as we can find a job that is much easier but most importantly learning and understanding from the internships. Experience counts more than grades in the short and long run.

2. My Program – Which program did you choose and describe in summary overall program about what you learned from the campuses.

I chose the Bachelor of Arts in International Hospitality and Events Management with Honours. It is a 3 year program involving 2 compulsory internships. As Hospitality is a major industry, it involves people coming from many different countries having diversified cultures. This benefits everyone as we are constantly striving to learn more about the industry but most importantly, our peers cultures.

The experience you get from this school and campus is just surreal, whether it would be from the students or the teachers. Many opportunities are provided towards us and the teachers are very helpful and will not hesitate to conduct private one to one classes to help us if we do not happen to understand the subject well during the daily classes.

3. My Internship – Where did you do your internships and which one was your best experience out of all?

I have currently just concluded my first internship at the Four Seasons, Geneva and I can say that it was the best 4 month experience I have ever had. I would not have such a high end well known hotel if it weren’t from the lecturers at the campus who endlessly prepared me for this interview. To be the only intern at this hotel during this pandemic opened my eyes and taught me how lucky one can be and to cherish everything that is given to you.

This internship was very hard and intense. It was not the slightest bit easy in any way. Then again, if we are not hardworking and diligent, we will be a nobody. After 2 weeks, I slowly got to the grips and then managed to go with the flow of the work with minimal mistakes. It was very fast paced and you had no time to breathe or think about anything else, it was all about what you are going to do now. I am lucky as I was given the opportunity to do a cross training program. For the first 2 months, I worked at the bar and the remaining months, as a bellman/concierge and the guest relations.

4. My Future – What are your goals after graduation?

After graduation, I aspire to do an MBA and specialize in the marketing field as that is my end goal. With the knowledge from my past working experiences and the ones from the school, I would like to open my own business, preferably in the Food and Beverage industry. SHMS was the best choice to help prepare and equip me to prepare for my future plans.
